The Shire of Exmouth officially opened Exmouth’s new Recycle Centre, on Friday 10 October 2025. The opening celebrated a key milestone for the community, with the new facility representing a positive step forward in reducing Exmouth’s carbon footprint.

The opening was attended by Minister for Environment; Community Services; Homelessness Hon Matthew Swinburne MLC, Kevin Michel MLA, Exmouth Shire President Matthew Niikkula and other special guests.

Shire President Matt Niikkula opened the ceremony by welcoming all our guests, before taking them for a VIP tour of the facility.  The opening achieved a key Shire commitment and community outcome, supporting sustainable initiatives and environmental stewardship.

Shire President Matthew Niikkula said: “We are delighted to open the Recycle Centre, which represents a big win for our community. There is a dire need for recycling in Exmouth, as we work towards improving sustainability in the region and taking items out of landfill.

“We are proud to deliver this facility in line with the Shire’s Strategic Community Plan 2023-2033, and recognise the significance of this project’s completion. We look forward to increasing our capacity to recycle as we build a sustainable Exmouth for visitors and residents alike.”

This project was made possible with funding support from both the Western Australian and Commonwealth governments, through the Recycling Modernisation Fund.

The new facility was designed with the intention to recycle, repurposing the old power station building that was no longer in use. Located centrally within Exmouth, this centre is easily accessible and utilises a prime location that has the space and capacity to host a critical service to the community.

The Recycle Centre has an easy one-way entry and exit point, allowing users to drive through and drop off items, in a natural flow to minimise congestion. The Recycle Centre will accept cardboard, e-waste, milk bottles, polystyrene and steel cans, and is expected to increase this capacity in the future. A new cardboard baler machine is on-site, ready to crush and compact cardboard in a standalone secured area.

The Recycle Centre is free, and will be open Monday-Friday between 10.00am-4.00pm, Saturdays from 9.00am-2.00pm. It will be closed on Sunday’s and public holidays.
