MEDIA RELEASE

Community members of all ages celebrated Australia Day with a splash at the pool and enjoyed the free Bacon & Egg Rolls, cake and the Aqua Run on this calm Exmouth summer day.

Before awarding the Auspire Awards to the successful nominees, Shire President Darlene Allston referred to the shared Australian story of 60,000 years and the exciting new chapters that are written every day: a story and a day that should be used as an opportunity where the whole community can take the time to reflect on our shared history, the highs and the lows, and to honour and celebrate the stories of all Australians.

In this spirit, the Auspire Awards have been presented to the Learmonth Solar Observatory for their Haunted House, the St Johns Ambulance for their volunteer emergency services to the community and Grace Keast. Grace received the Community Citizen of the Year Award for her inspiring efforts for the Exmouth community.

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO GRACE KEAST

"Since moving to Exmouth in 2014 I have always been impressed by this community and the help and assistance offered in so many ways by individuals to the community at large.  The way that people look out for one another is inspiring. This, the Exmouth community, has inspired me to get involved and help where I can, it’s really as simple as that!  So, to receive a nomination for the Auspire Community Citizen of the Year is very humbling.  I follow in the wake of so many people who make this community so special."

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO SIMON ROBERTS (St JOHNS AMBULANCE SUB CENTRE EXMOUTH)

"Ambulance officers in Exmouth are all volunteers, there are no paid paramedics in town, and our SubCentre is run by a committee of volunteers. While, at times, it can be demanding, it is also immensely rewarding to be able to serve residents and visitors alike. We are humbled by this recognition of the service we provide."

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE LEARMONTH SOLAR OBSERVATORY TEAM

"The traditional Haunted House goes back many, many years here in town. So we are thankful for being part of such a strong tradition; specifically for this year, we reached out to the community for donations for our props to use in our Haunted House, and we had an outpouring of support. Many donations, many comments about how excited everyone was - and we look forward to scaring everyone next year!"
