SHIRE OF EXMOUTH WELCOMES FIVE NEW AUSTRALIANS

Published on Thursday, 23 September 2021 at 5:00:00 PM

With the 20th anniversary of Australian Citizenship Day this month, today's ceremony is an opportunity for all Australians to recognise and reflect on the meaning of Australian citizenship and celebrate it.

The conferees from five countries, including Britain, Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden and the United States of America, received their citizenship of Shire President Matthew Niikkula, who conducted the last citizenship ceremony for 2021, with the following ceremony held on Australia Day.

The Shire of Exmouth runs the citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs every three months per the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies Code requirements; light refreshments and the opportunity to take pictures with Councillors and other participants at the Ningaloo Centre followed the ceremony.

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHIRE – SHIRE PRESIDENT MATT NIIKKULA

"When these new Australians make their citizenship pledge, it marks the final step on their journey to becoming an Australian. It is a great opportunity for all Australians, whether they are citizens by birth or by choice, to come together to acknowledge what's great about being Australian."

“Choosing to become an Australian citizen means choosing to become a full member of Australian society. When people become citizens, they embrace the privileges, rights, and responsibilities that come with Australian citizenship and commit to our nation's shared values of respect, freedom, democracy and equality.”
