The Shire of Exmouth has entered into a memorandum of understanding that will see the Exmouth Freemasons take over the community can recycling program.

The announcement follows a series of public information sessions hosted by the Shire to encourage local community groups to take over the program, which was previously run by the local wildlife CARE organisation.

Shire Acting CEO Keith Woodward said “Aluminium can recycling had a long history in Exmouth.

The Shire had continued collecting cans for recycling at its works depot for the last few months while a new program manager was found. It is great to now have a not for profit, charitable organisation like the Freemasons on board.”

Under the memorandum of understanding the Shire will provide the Freemasons with can cages and equipment and the organisation will facilitate local collection and use the money raised from recycling to support local community groups and projects.

The Shire’s new solar powered recycling bins and vertical baler, secured through a Community and Industry Engagement (CIE) grant, would also be put to work assisting the Freemasons with their recycling efforts.

“It will be great to have the can cages back out in the community again so people can drop off their aluminium cans and divert the waste from landfill,” Mr Woodward said.

The Freemasons will be touching base with local businesses who would like to act as collection points in the can recycling program.
