EXMOUTH COUNCIL PAVES THE WAY TO A GREENER FUTURE IN REMOTE REGIONAL TRAVEL

In the hustle and bustle of today's fast-paced world, finding sustainable solutions for everyday life has become an integral part of our collective consciousness. And when it comes to transportation, the need for environmentally friendly options has never been more pressing. Enter Exmouth, with a Council committed to listening to its community members' aspirations and taking strides towards a greener future as per the Strategic Community Plan while facing the hurdles of remote regional travel distances.

With its remote location, Exmouth faces unique challenges when it comes to transportation. The nearest major city, Perth, is over 1,200 kilometres away, making long-distance travel a necessity for many residents and visitors. Traditionally, this has meant relying heavily on cars and planes, both of which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

However, Exmouth is determined to find innovative solutions that prioritise the environment without sacrificing convenience. One of the key initiatives in this regard is the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs). EVs offer a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional combustion engine vehicles, emitting zero tailpipe emissions and reducing overall air pollution.

Horizon Power, together with Synergy and the WA State Government, is to build Australia's longest electric vehicle fast-charging network, from Kununurra in the north to Esperance and as far as Eucla in the south.

When complete, EV drivers will have access to 98 EV charging stations across 49 locations along major West Australian transport routes. The locations selected for installing fast-charging infrastructure have been identified through the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategic Planning Report with input derived from Local Government Authorities and Regional Development Commissions.

The Shire of Exmouth has been actively supporting Horizon Power in installing electric vehicle charging stations on the Ningaloo Centre premises to encourage residents and tourists alike to make the switch to electric. The 150kW DC fast charger at the Ningaloo Centre can charge an EV enough in as little as 20 minutes to easily get travellers to the next charging station.

“Council's commitment to a greener future has been truly commendable. With their efforts, the administration has fast-tracked the installation at the Ningaloo Centre so that travellers and visitors can now access more eco-friendly ways of getting around, reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner environment.”

“The installation of the EV chargers and parking bays at the Ningaloo Centre is one of the many commitments Council is working towards to establish Exmouth as a clean and green town as per our Strategic Community Plan.”

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO HORIZON POWER

“There have been more than 1,500 charging sessions along the network since the first charging site went live in Geraldton in April 2023, and this new station in Exmouth is an exciting milestone for the region. The central location at the Ningaloo Centre will be a crucial part of the network, opening up the region further for EV drivers in WA.”
