NINGALOO CENTRE TO HOST 'THERE WERE MOMENTS OF TRANSFORMATION'

Published on Wednesday, 16 September 2020 at 12:28:37 PM

There Were Moments of Transformation explores the power and fragility of transformation through video, jewellery, glass, ceramics and sculpture. Featuring never-travelled works by international artists alongside pieces by local WA artists. Including Auguste Rodin, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, William Kentridge as well as Lucy Yukenbarri and Bethamy Linton. The exhibition aims to develop genuine relationships, meaningful encounters, community connections and the contribution of many different voices. It asks everyone to consider through the creation of these showcased works, how materials change, how they change us, and the world around us.

While the exhibition contains several key works from the State Art Collection such as Renoir’s Tete de Venus and Rodin’s 1880 bronze La Faunesse à genoux [Kneeling fauness], AGWA Curator of 19th Century Arts, Melissa Harpley explained the focus was on materiality, creative process and applying a different lens of looking at the transformative nature of art.

Accompanying There Were Moments of Transformation is the dynamic engagement activity Conversations with Rain, developed in partnership between the Art Gallery of WA and ECU School of Education and supported by Healthway, Act-Belong-Commit. This ongoing multi-platform project explores children’s creative relations with the weather – as a way of potentially transforming our climate futures. Echoing the collaborative touring model championed by Freighting Ideas, Conversations with Rain harnesses learning methodologies that prioritise creativity, participation and engagement. Visitors of all ages can pick up a Conversations with Rain response journal and take it with them into the exhibition as a way of encouraging more in-depth and reflective responses through creative activities. The dance film Kep Waankiny (Water Talking) plays with audio work Sound of Rain inviting visitors to draw a tiny storm while listening to child-made rain.

There Were Moments of Transformation opens at the Tantabiddi Travelling Gallery on Friday, 25/09/2020 at 6:30 PM with a grand opening night including local musicians and artists Jimmy McGrath, Shmone and Jessica Dudley. The exhibition runs from Saturday, 26/09/2020 to Sunday, 25/10/2020

About Freighting Ideas

Freighting Ideas is a WA regional touring program developed by ART ON THE MOVE and the Art Gallery of WA through funding from the State Government’s Regional Exhibition Touring Boost (RETB).

The program is a collaborative touring model that challenges traditional touring processes by placing local artists and audiences at the centre of engagement. It aims to develop genuine relationships, meaningful encounters, community connections and the contribution of many different voices.

There Were Moments of Transformation is the second exhibition developed and toured through the Freighting Ideas initiative. The exhibition will tour across WA in parallel to the first touring exhibition How Did I Get Here?

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO ART GALLERY WA (AGWA)  – CURATOR OF 19th CENTURY ARTS, MELISSA HARPLEY

“With this exhibition, we wanted to explore the process of transformation that occurs through art and the process of making works. Our approach lies in drawing out how materials are transformed as works are created, how artists engage and transform the environment during their development process, and lastly how we are transformed, by the experience of considering the process, the emotional response generated and our connection to the works.”

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO ART ON THE MOVE – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR KIM JAMESON

“The Regional Exhibition Touring Boost investment has been put in place in recognition of the great work being achieved in regional galleries across WA and their contribution to the development of healthy environments by telling stories through art. This approach contributes to tourism, encourages community connectivity, activation of space leading to a sense of place, identity and well-being.”
