The Shire is pleased to announce the Hon. Minister for Planning has endorsed Scheme Amendment No.4 to the Shires Local Planning Scheme No.4, submitted in February 2021.

The amendment will allow businesses and landowners to provide temporary accommodation for workers within Service Commercial zoned land generally bounded by Murat Road, Nimitz Street, Reid Street and Welch Street, Exmouth, as shown below, subject to conditions.

The amendment will come into full effect after it is published in the Government Gazette. Further updates and information will be released in due course.

The Shire is also continuing to progress other options and proposals with State Government, the Gascoyne Development Commission, the Exmouth Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other stakeholders for workers accommodation in Exmouth.

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHIRE – SHIRE PRESIDENT MATT NIIKKULA

"Council is certainly aware of the accommodation issue, which creates several follow-on problems for our community. We would love to have the confidence in developers to be able to come and start investing and building more affordable accommodation in town and are advocating and enabling this wherever we can."

"The high price of land and shortage of residential accommodation has encouraged business operators to live and work from the same premises; these changes will enable them to develop workers accommodation in addition to a caretaker's dwelling where appropriate."
