CONTAINER'S FOR CHANGE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO LOCAL CLUBS AND NOT-FOR-PROFITS

The success story of Containers for Change in Exmouth began on 1 October. Record numbers of 30,000 to 50,000 containers that are recycled on a Saturday morning are well above the average of neighbouring towns of Carnarvon and Meekatharra.

In the first six months, Exmouth residents recycled more than 550,000 containers - outside of the town's "busy" season. All of these eligible containers are saved from ending up in landfill or left by the side of the road.

Now, just before Easter, the programme is being rolled out to more volunteers by the Freemasons, who applied to become a registered mobile point. They are being supported by the Shire of Exmouth in organising and communicating the extended volunteer programme.

The Shire of Exmouth strongly encourages local clubs and not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) to register and support the recycling initiative while raising funds for their organisation and becoming more self-sustaining.

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHIRE – ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MATTHEW BIRD

"Our local clubs and NPOs are crucial connectors in our community and support mental health and well-being. We congratulate the Exmouth Freemasons for their considerable work done to date and their invitation to involve other clubs in our community to become financially self-sufficient and are happy to support this. We are currently in the process to investigate a corporate volunteer program to involve larger organisations in the area, which then can donate the money to their community project of choice."

"As stewards of Exmouth's unique environment, we need to continue to play an important role in ensuring the Ningaloo Region is kept clean and minimise litter like plastic bottles and cans going in the water or onto the roadside. We all know healthy habitats make for great marine interactions, from swimming with the biggest fish in the ocean to encounters with land-based creatures like the endangered black-footed Wallaby."
