Published on Tuesday, 26 April 2022 at 2:10:00 PM

More than 500 people attended the ANZAC Day commemorative service in Exmouth, which is traditionally held at 6am – followed by the ANZAC march.

Shire of Exmouth Shire President Darlene Allston welcomed those who gathered to remember the courageous men and women who fought for our freedom.  Those who died, those who still bear the physical and mental scars of war and those who continue to serve in our armed forces so that we may live in peace.

She reminded all in attendance of the fragile nature of peace, and the devastating impact of war on people’s lives.

Also in attendance was Peter Foster MLC, Labor Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region.

COMMENTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SHIRE – SHIRE PRESIDENT DARLENE ALLSTON

“ANZAC Day allows us to reflect on the many meanings of war. And in the light of the recent events in Europe, we are grateful that our military personnel - these brave men and women – have and always will be the first in line to fight for the universal decencies of humankind. The rights of the weak against the strong. And the rights of all to strive for the very best they can.”

“Exmouth was built around the US Naval Communications Station Harold E Holt, but the North West Cape’s role in military operations began long before.

“During World War II the Exmouth Gulf provided harbour for US ships and submarines as part of Operation Potshot. In 1943 construction started at Learmonth Airstrip and the heroic men of Z Force left the Exmouth Gulf aboard the Krait on Operation Jaywick.”

“Our gratitude and respect is etched in street names, memorial sites and in our commemorations here today.”
