Waste Management
Waste Disposal Site
The rubbish disposal site is situated 10 kilometres south of the Exmouth townsite on the Exmouth/Minilya Road. Rubbish sites can be source of health hazards.
Placing refuse in the trench provided, or at least on the edge will allow easy access for others. The rubbish tip has segregated tipping areas to make use and management of the tip easier for everybody, such as green waste for recycling. Please observe the directions at the rubbish site and place types of rubbish in the correct disposal areas.

Recycling
Aluminium Cans – The Shire have an appointed authorised collector of aluminium (and lead) within the Shire of Exmouth. Their appointment has seen the introduction of a fortnightly kerbside aluminium can collection. The Shire has supplied residents with bags for can storage and also made available appropriate collection bins/cages for caravan parks and licensed premises. Such establishments pay a substantial amount each year in rubbish charges to the Shire. As their rubbish comprises a significant volume of aluminium cans, diversion of the cans out of the rubbish stream not only has the obvious environmental benefits, but it will also result in savings due to a corresponding reduction in rubbish services required.
Lead – An authorised collector of lead has also been appointed by the Shire. Batteries from motor vehicles incur a $5 collection/transportation fee. This fee will be charged when a new battery is purchased from a local distributor. The old battery will be stored by the distributor for collection and recycling. License conditions imposed on the Shire by the Department of Environmental Protection prohibit the disposal of lead at the rubbish tip. Therefore the only option for the appropriate disposal of automobile batteries and other lead based products is for transportation to Perth for recycling.
Waste Motor Oils – Local contractor Mr Ted Motzel has a collection service for waste motor oils.
Waste Cooking Oils - These oils are collected from commercial food premises in Exmouth and Coral Bay for recycling. Please contact Mr Motzel direct for advice on fees and charges that may apply for these services 0417 922 830.
Cardboard – Both of the local supermarkets have cardboard bailing machines. The bailed cardboard is transported back to Perth for recycling. Unfortunately there are no means at this stage for cardboard recycling for the general Exmouth community.
Home Composting Rebate – The Shire provides a 30% rebate to householders on proof of local purchase of an approved type of compost bin/tumbler or worm farm. An approved type of compost bin/tumbler are those which are fly and vermin proof. Home composting has been used for many years by keen gardeners and is now encouraged as a means of reducing the amount of waste being discarded to landfill. It also reduces odours in the wheelie bins by diverting food scraps from the waste stream.
Green Waste – A sign posted green waste area has been allocated at the rubbish tip site. The Shire encourages the community to discard their green waste in the designated area.
