Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

The Western Australian Disability Services Act requires all Local Governments to develop and implement a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to facilities and services.  Other legislation underpinning access and inclusion includes the Western Australia Equal Opportunity Act (1984) and the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), both of which make discrimination on the basis of a person’s disability unlawful.

In accordance with the above legislation, throughout 2006/7 the Shire of Exmouth has developed a DAIP to meet the current requirements.  In doing so, the Shire worked together with our Disability Services Committee and the broader community, committing to an extensive planning process that included:

• A review of the existing Disability Services Plan
• Desktop audit of achievements 1996 – 2006
• Consultation with stakeholders and residents
• Development of a five-year DAIP
• 21 day period of public comment for the draft DAIP
• Formal endorsement of the DAIP 2007 – 2012 by the Council of the Shire of Exmouth

There are six desired outcomes of a DAIP that relate to ensuring that people with disabilities are able to access services, events, buildings and facilities provided or managed by the Shire and can also readily access information, quality of service, complaints processes and any public consultation.

The Shire of Exmouth formally lodged the DAIP 2007 – 2012 with the Disability Services Commission in June 2007 and has since received confirmation from them that it fully meets the requirements of the Disability Services Act 1993.
